immune boosting smoothie

immune boosting smoothie

Serves 4

A delicious healthy smoothie from our Co-Founder and Nutrition Director, Louise Keats.

A fruit and vegetable smoothie can be great for you, but including some healthy fats
(that’s you, avocado and hemp seeds) as well as some protein (hemp seeds again),
makes it so much more nourishing and satiating.
The incredibly vibrant colour of this smoothie is a clue that it’s a nutritional
powerhouse. It’s packed with vitamin C, beta-carotene, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and other nutrients to help support your immune health and keep you fighting fit.

  • Ruby red grapefruit, peeled and cut into quarters (see Tips)
  • 160 g beetroot, peeled and cubed
  • 60 g avocado, flesh only
  • 1 banana, chopped
  • 100 g hemp seeds (see Nutrition note)
  • 2–3 cm piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 2–3 cm piece fresh turmeric, peeled
  • ¹⁄₈ tsp ground black pepper
  • 100 g ice cubes
  • 2 tsp Kakadu plum powder (optional – see Nutrition note)
  • 500 g filtered water, chilled (see Tips)
  • 2 tsp raw honey (optional – see Tips)

  1. Place all ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend about 2 minutes or until smooth and frothy. Divide between glasses to serve.

  • You can replace the grapefruit with a large orange in this recipe.
  • You can replace the filtered water with coconut water in this recipe.
  • When buying honey, I always try to source raw, local honey. Raw honey hasn’t been highly refined or heated (pasteurised) and so it typically contains more nutrients, polyphenols and pollen. The research is still unfolding, but scientists are interested in the antibacterial and immune-support role that raw honey appears to play.
  • Hemp seeds are from the same species as cannabis, but they don’t have any psychoactive effects. On the contrary, they’re exceptionally nutritious and a rich source of protein, omega fats and various vitamins and minerals.
  • Also known as the ‘bush plum’, Kakadu plum is an Australian native fruit that’s particularly rich in vitamin C and polyphenols. You can find Kakadu plum powder in health food stores or online.
